Zen Kids and Family Camping Retreat
with MRO Staff
July 31 - August 2, 2020
Gazing at stars, waking to birdsong, cooking food over a glowing fire we’ve made. Simple experiences like these bring us directly to our inherent relationship with nature. Being intimate with the natural world is a precious gift for us all, particularly so for our children. At ease in nature, we see their creativity and confidence blossom.
Nearly every one of us can think back to a moment in our childhood when we experienced a deep sense of “rightness” in nature. These moments, sometimes brief but always unmistakable, make it easier to remember that as insulated or distant as we may feel from the wild, we are an intrinsic part of it, of its beauty and self-sustaining order.
Join us in exploring and learning to love the wild Catskill Mountain nook that is part of Zen Mountain Monastery. We’ll begin each day with zazen, weaving the practice of awareness through all the activities we’ll engage in during the day. We’ll learn and develop basic wilderness skills: creating a shelter, making fire and cooking with it, identifying edible plants, learning the language of the birds and more. We’ll have plenty of time for games, exploration and stories around the campfire. Our hope is that through this time together we’ll rekindle our connection to what is free, untamed and wholly alive in each one of us.
Children ages 4 (or old enough to be potty-trained) through 10 are welcome, accompanied by at least one parent. If you’ve never been to the Monastery or one of the Zen Kids programs, please call us before registering.
Please call the Training Office to register for this retreat: (845) 688-2228.
Please don’t let financial issues prevent you from attending a program at the Monastery. If you can’t afford the program fee, there are options.
