Open Hearth Art Practice Presents: This Show Is My Funeral
with Josephine Simple, MRO
September 22, 2023
A One-Person Show with Josephine Simple
I’m trans and this show is a funeral for my pre-transition self. Come mourn and celebrate with me the life I used to have. This is a show about impermanence and the illusory self, but it’s also truly my funeral. For real. And it’s probably one of the funnier funerals you will ever attend.
When certain people in my life found out about my transition, they started talking about my old self as though “he” was a different person from me, and as though “he” had died. I found this alienating, pretty irrelevant to my own experience, and, frankly, very annoying. And I also saw the theatrical appeal and decided to take the metaphor of transition of death and rebirth seriously. Where I ended up was not at all what I expected.
Tickets are $10 per person in advance. All proceeds go directly to the artist. No one will be turned away or denied reservation for lack of funds. Registration will be limited to 30 people.
If you would like to make an additional donation, all proceeds will go directly to the artist. Thank you!

Josephine Simple is a writer, performer, comedian, and software engineer. She first set foot in Fire Lotus Temple in 2009, and has been a steady part of the sangha since 2014, becoming a student of Hogen Sensei in 2020. She sees her writing and performance as nothing other than her vow to wake up, to untangle and reweave the strange karma she’s been given (and made for herself), and hopes you’ll laugh with her as her foot gets caught in the threads, and makes her fall on her face.
