New Year’s Eve at Zen Mountain Monastery
December 31, 2023 - January 1, 2024
Join us as we welcome in 2024. On Sunday, December 31st, Zen Mountain Monastery will open to the sangha at the conclusion of our Rohatsu sesshin (a weeklong silent meditation intensive) as we cross the threshold into the New Year. Please join us as we release the past year and welcome the new within the warmth of our sangha treasure.
Please arrive by 6:30, entering through the front door of the Monastery to check in with the front door greeter when you arrive.
If this is your first time at Zen Mountain Monastery or if you have not received beginning instruction in meditation at the Monastery or at Fire Lotus Temple in Brooklyn, please contact the registrar: (email@example.com)
Starting with zazen 7-9 pm, then a short break, we will resume zazen at 10pm to begin Fusatsu (Renewal of Vows ceremony and talk) at 11pm. This liturgy service brings us close so that we can take full responsibility for our actions, and renew our intentions for the coming year. As part of the ceremony, Shugen Roshi, the abbot of the Monastery, will offer a talk on some aspect of the moral and ethical teachings of Zen Buddhism.
Zazen will continue until midnight when the sounding of the Temple instruments will ring us into the New Year. We conclude the evening with a New Years’ entering ceremony as we set our aspirations and intentions for the year ahead together.
We will conclude with a sparkling toast to the New Year and midnight breakfast.
Please note: This registration is for the New Years Eve Program Only: 7 pm–12:30 am
If you need to stay overnight, we have limited accommodations. Please contact the registrar at firstname.lastname@example.org if you need to stay overnight.
