Paying Attention: Media and Its Impact on Identity – (online) TGNC Quarterly Meeting (April)

with Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming (TGNC) Sangha Facilitators

April 17, 2024

Please note: This is an affinity meeting, and is reserved for only those who identify as Transgender or Gender Non-Conforming.

What we pay attention to shapes our mind. It speaks to what we turn towards and attend to, and what we allow to enter. And all around us the media and news compete for our eyes and ears. As the target of legislation and the topic of editorials, the TGNC community can feel constantly assailed and rarely if ever fully seen. How do we filter the content we consume? And how do we self-regulate the act of consuming it? What are we in touch with, and touched by?

Thich Nhat Hanh warns that in modern society “most of us don’t want to be in touch with ourselves; we want to be in touch with other things like religion, sports, politics, a book—we want to forget ourselves. Anytime we have leisure, we want to invite something else to enter us, opening ourselves to the television and telling the television to come and colonize us. So first of all, ‘in touch’ means in touch with oneself in order to find out the source of wisdom, understanding, and compassion in each of us. Being in touch with oneself is the meaning of meditation, to be aware of what is going on in your body, in your feelings, in your mind.” (Being Peace)

Join us for a group discussion and share what has been helpful, where you still struggle, and what role your practice plays in navigating it all.

This evening aims to provide a space where TGNC practitioners can safely share their own experiences and learn from each other.

Hosted by the TGNC Affinity Group —A support and discussion group for anyone who identifies as part of the TGNC (Trans Gender Non-Conforming) Community.

Any questions can be sent to the group coordinators at tgnc@dharma.net
