Join us as we welcome Open Sky back to the Temple!
Within the Zen tradition, students regularly attend sesshin and zazenkai, meditation intensives that utilize a powerful, carefully designed schedule of zazen and other forms of traditional training. Within the outer discipline that these highly structured intensives offer, students develop an inner discipline of silence, stillness and careful attention. This Open Sky retreat integrates the same intensity and dedication of sesshin, with the open, formless quality of a hermitage. The purpose is to encourage students to cultivate and bring forth their own inner strength and resolve for practice within the context of a deliberately less-structured retreat and is designed to help you more deeply interweave practice into life. Most of all, it is an invitation to meet yourself and your practice on your own ground, with the support of the sangha, and within the Temple’s deep silence and stillness.
The intensive starts Thursday evening with supper, after which the sangha gathers in the zendo and the silence begins. For the next two days, the Temple is open day and night. You are encouraged to sit anytime, for any length of time, coming and going to and from the Temple as needed. There will be no timed periods of zazen, though there will be periodic sessions of walking meditation. Meals will be provided and received in silence each day. You may choose to stay at the Temple for the duration of the retreat or sleep at home.
The intensive is open to anyone who practices regularly at the Temple or Zen Mountain Monastery. Participants must make a commitment to join us by 6PM on Thursday, for the opening evening’s introduction/orientation and to being present at the retreat’s conclusion on Saturday at 5PM, which will close with supper and a mondo giving the sangha a chance to share their experiences. A commitment must also be made to participate in a total of at least four hours of practice on both Friday and Saturday.
If you plan on spending the night, please bring a towel. You may also wish to bring a sleeping bag or an additional blanket.
This retreat is offered for a suggested donation of $100-$250.
