Fall Ango 2019, Buddhist Studies, Session 4, Zen Mountain Monastery

Geoffrey Shugen Arnold, Roshi

Zen Mountain Monastery, 11/14/2019

In this study session Shugen Roshi leads the sangha in a dialogue on Right Speech which continues the examination of the Eightfold Path. The Buddha enumerated as those things that constitute wrong speech as false, slanderous, harsh and idle speech. The Lankavatara Sutra later takes up speech on a deeper level, examining the relationship of language to consciousness and introducing the idea that the purpose of speech is to align oneself with what is true.
