The monastics and residents of the Monastery and Fire Lotus Temple maintain a Zen training schedule, and most programs are open to any participant. Each week we are livestreamingthe Monastery’s Sunday morning program in addition to daily zazen Tuesday evening through Saturday evening. Additionally, you’ll find below a list of daily opportunities for group practice over Zoom.
In practicing Buddhadharma we turn inwards and find the calm and clear understanding that is within each of us. We turn outwards to offer lovingkindness, patience and compassion to every being. As practitioners, we take refuge in the Three Treasures, drawing on our trust in the Dharma and the essential desire in each of us for happiness and well-being. Each morning we chant the Four Immeasurables and we encourage you to join us by adding them to your morning liturgy. As each of us gives voice to these profound blessings, we come together through space and time, united by our shared intention.
May all beings be free from suffering and the root of suffering May all beings know happiness and the root of happiness May all beings live in sympathetic joy, rejoicing in the happiness of others May all beings live in equanimity, free from passion, aggression and delusion.

Ango is our three-month training intensive that takes place each spring and fall, a rich and sustained opportunity to bring our practice more in tune with our daily lives. Ango is open to those who have experience with Zen practice within the MRO, have an ongoing daily meditation practice, and have attended sesshin. This season’s theme will be Buddha Nature, brought out through readings, talks and mondos (question & answer sessions), as well as personal and group study. In this we take up the interplay of all the gates of training: zazen, liturgy, moral and ethical teachings, creative expression, the…
The Four Great Elements are called Mahābhūta. The traditional four-element framework; Earth, Water, Fire, Air, is sometimes expanded to include Space and Consciousness. This creates a map of human experience. Dōgen reminds us that we awaken through this very body, this very earth, these changing conditions. In the Buddha Dharma, the elements are dynamic expressions of reality—of Buddha nature expressing itself. To study the elements is to study impermanence, interdependence, and the absence of a fixed, separate self. No element exists independently. Our focus will be to allow the elemental nature—the energetic power of the element—lead the way, determining your…

We ask that participants stay for the entire length of the program. We will offer beginning instruction from 7:15-8pm. Buddhadharma contains a multitude of teachings on peace of mind, and when we look deeply at our own motivation to practice, we can see that peace of mind is what we seek. Dogen Zenji called zazen the “dharma gate of ease and joy”—indeed, all of the Zen ancestors point to zazen as a practice of entering into great peace. The Peaceful Dwelling meditation intensive provides a powerful container for exploring and developing your zazen as a practice of wakeful, spacious relaxation with just the right amount of discipline. Blending structured support with self-directed practice, this weekend retreat includes the morning…

After he left his family's home to seek liberation from suffering, Shakyamuni Buddha spent some years studying with spiritual teachers and engaging in extreme ascetic practices. Every year, Zen Mountain Monastery hosts a festive and family-friendly holiday gathering for people across Ulster County who may otherwise not have such an opportunity. COVID impacted our ability to hold this in-person for a few years, though we still delivered to folks. From its inception in 1987, this event has been offered in collaboration with the area's merchants, restaurant owners, professionals and community members who contribute food, gift items, holiday decorations, cash donations, and volunteer labor. Each year, approximately 200 folks come from area shelters, group homes, agencies, and from local neighborhoods to receive […]

The Further Steps retreats are Intermediate level retreats which can be taken more than once. They provide opportunities to experience more extended periods of silence and zazen, explore Zen training through teaching and discussion, and engage in face-to-face teaching. Prior participation in an Introduction to Zen Training weekend is a prerequisite. In this retreat we will examine the Buddha's fundamental teaching of the Four Noble Truths–apparently simple, it succinctly contains the entirety of the Buddhist path. Our focus will be on understanding this teaching and how to bring it alive as a liberative practice, from recognizing our reactive patterns of…
Butoh: The Art of Receiving, with Vangeline This workshop explores Butoh as a practice of embodied awareness, receptivity, and presence. Drawing from traditional Japanese Butoh, Noguchi Taiso (Noguchi Gymnastics), and contemporary understanding of the nervous system, participants are invited to cultivate a quieter, more receptive way of moving and perceiving. Rather than emphasizing effort or technique, the workshop investigates what happens when movement arises through listening instead of doing. Participants learn to recognize and soften habitual patterns of muscular tension, allowing the body to move with greater ease, fluidity, and responsiveness. A central component of the practice is Noguchi Taiso, a Japanese…

The Dharma assures us that we are already in the midst of our wholeness and yet our habit-mind easily falls into strategizing about how to make something (better) happen, especially in our Zen practice. What if we stop trying to get somewhere in practice and instead give that energy to cultivating faith? When we trust our resonance with the teachings, we have already started a relationship with faith. As practice continues and we begin to understand what it means to let go and to stop trying to control our experience, faith becomes a vital energy in the power of our zazen…

All of Buddhist practice is leading us toward our true homecoming: the discovery that this very life, this very heart-mind and body, can be the source of our deepest fulfillment. Through training, and sincere, well-directed effort, as well as the support of a conducive environment, we can find that the refuge we seek is already here. […]

Through it all, he remained unsatisfied that he had resolved his search. Inspired by a memory of an experience of deep, easeful meditation he'd experienced in his youth, he […]

At ZCNYC, we celebrate the Buddha’s enlightenment with a vigil dedicated to the simple yet profound practice of zazen. We’ll begin Friday evening with an informal potluck supper, followed by a teaching in the zendo. Then, we’ll mark the Buddha’s enlightenment by sitting together through the night with...

Through it all, he remained unsatisfied that he had resolved his search. Inspired by a memory of an experience of deep, easeful meditation he'd experienced in his youth, he […]
