Touching the Earth: Zazen in the Park

The earth remains jagged and broken only to him or her who remains jagged and broken. —Walt Whitman, Song of the Rolling Earth It’s easy to feel disconnected from the natural world and the earth that sutains us, especially for those of us who live amid the asphalt and concrete of New York City. But the earth is always right beneath our feet, just as the breath is always available in the present moment. We don’t need to go somewhere else. In this retreat, we’ll gather togther to spend the morning sitting zazen outdoors in Prospect Park, cultivating our relationship to the living breath and the living earth. We’ll keep it simple: after a few encouraging words, we’ll sit through the morning without timed periods, standing to stretch our legs whenever we feel the need. We’ll then conclude with a few closing remarks and a short liturgy. Bring an old towel or a blanket and a zafu to sit on, an extra sweater, a water bottle, and (depending on the forecast) a raincoat or poncho.
