Bowing before a teacher, an image, a sacred space, or a fellow practitioner, are inseparable acts of Buddhist practice. But what does it mean to bow? And is it the same as bowing to an adversary? A mountain? A meal? In this dharma encounter, Zuisei Sensei asks Ango participants to step forward and present their understanding or their questions about bowing. As you’ll hear, many of the exchanges are illuminating and might even challenge your own notions about faith, identification, and gratitude.

What does it mean to cultivate selflessness and, when needed, to embody self fully, in this female form? Zuisei Sensei invokes a few of our women ancestors and contemporaries, including Otagaki Rengetsu, Reverend Angel Kyodo Williams, Hojin Sensei, and her own experiences in light of this question.

Zen Mountain Monastery, 08/25/2018

Drawing on her time at a mountain lake, Zuisei Sensei talks about that which is beyond ordinary knowing and must be known intimately. As she puts it, devoting our full attention to an object — the breath, a koan — can be an act of love. Zazen itself is that act of love, an act rewarded in ways we cannot predict.

Podcast Interview: Zuisei Goddard on Mindfulness

·

The term Mindfulness—as an approach to meditation or perhaps as a lifestyle choice—seems to be everywhere one turns these days. But it’s origins in the Buddhist canon and its explication by some of the great meditation masters of the ages, can lead us to equanimity, insight and, ultimately, to wisdom and compassion.
In this March 2017 interview with Zuisei Goddard, Sensei, we talk about the misunderstandings and true potential of cultivating—and maintaining—awareness. This conversation was recorded ahead of Zuisei’s April 2017 retreat, “Taming the Mind.”
